PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police arrested a man Monday evening after they say he tried to assault firefighters who had arrived to help him after he was reported injured in a bicycle crash.

Crews from Portland Fire and Rescue responded to a report of an injured cyclist at the intersection of Southwest Miles Street and Southwest Capitol Hill Road at 5:55 p.m. after someone called 911 and said the rider had collided with a pole.

When firefighters arrived at the scene they reported seeing the cyclist, 31-year-old Scott A. Parker, lying on the ground. As crews were unloading equipment to assist him, investigators said Parker got up from the ground and tried to get into the fire engine by crawling through the front driver’s side window.

The driver of the engine was still in the front seat, and police said that Parker reached through and grabbed, though the firefighter was able to push him away from the rig.

The firefighters requested police to the scene, and before officers could arrive Parker attempted to punch another firefighter.

Once officers arrived, Parker was taken into custody and treated for his injuries at the scene by PF&R crews. He was taken to the Multnomah County Jail on charges of attempted assault on a public safety officer and harassment.
