PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Animal Legal Defense Fund is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction for the shooting of a bald eagle in Washington County.

The injured eagle was tracked to a field in the Gaston area on June 28. Police received a tip about the eagle a week earlier, but it managed to fly away.

The eagle was taken to the Audubon Society of Portland for treatment. Workers there said the eagle was shot on both sides of its shoulder and shrapnel is visible in X-rays.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund reported Tuesday that while the eagle’s condition has improved, it’s doubtful the animal will return to the wild.

Audubon Society workers believe the eagle was part of a nesting pair and likely had a nest with a mate and eaglets.

The shooting is under investigation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Oregon State Police.

Hunting, capturing, shooting, injuring or killing a bald eagle is a crime under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act punishable by up to $5,000 in fines and a year in jail for first offenses.

It is also a violation of Oregon state law which could result in additional charges.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund, a national legal advocacy organization for animals, announced its $5,000 reward Tuesday. The Audubon Society of Portland is also offering a reward up to $1,500 for information leading to a conviction in this case.

Anyone with information is asked to call the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at 503-682-6131.
