Organizers at a day camp in the small town of Warren are scrambling to shuttle kids around after their bus was set on fire.

The camp is based out of a church on Ross Road where the charred, yellow bus is still in the parking lot.

Director Dave Galceran got a call from fire officials at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and when he arrived, the bus was still smoldering.

His heart sank.

“We’re very field trip oriented and we need transportation every day,” said Galceran.

Columbia County Sheriff Jeff Dickerson told FOX 12 a group of children got into the unlocked bus on Saturday and set a book on fire. Flames quickly spread to the rest of the bus and now, it is a total loss.

With activities and outings already planned for this week, Galceran spent the weekend looking for alternative transportation.

“We have three vans currently. We have a church van they were nice enough to let us use and then our own personal van. And we have zero seats left. The effort is just amplified. It’s easier taking a bus. That’s why we got it," he said.

By the look of all the happy campers playing in a park Tuesday afternoon, you’d never know a major part of the camp’s transportation fleet was destroyed. Kids admit, they are disappointed, but they’re trying to stay positive.

Nine-year-old camper Emily Greiner said, “We still got vans and we might need to make a few trips, but we still get there.”

Dickerson says his department has identified the juvenile responsible for starting the fire. That child is now facing charges of reckless burning and criminal mischief.
