Multiple brush fires shut down the southbound lanes of Highway 213 in the Oregon City area Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to reports of burning brush and grass near Redland Road at around 1 p.m. By 1:50 p.m., firefighters said the fires were under control.

Crews reported finding five fires that spread over one mile along the highway.

One section involved a power pole that supported a high-tension line, so Portland General Electric workers responded to shut off the power.

No buildings were threatened by the fire and the power pole was not damaged.

The Oregon Department of Transportation reported that all southbound lanes, along with the median and shoulder, were closed due to the fires. Drivers were advised to use an alternate route.

By 2:45 p.m. one lane had reopened and all lanes were expected to be open again by 3 p.m.

Firefighters reported receiving calls about a car on fire in the area that started the brush fires, while another witness claimed that a person was walking along the highway setting the fires. Later, investigators said the fires were apparently caused by sparks from a vehicle dragging its muffler.
