PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A celebration designed to give the Willamette River “a hug” while benefiting a local charity is kicking off at Portland’s newest beach this weekend.

The big float will take off from Portland Parks and Rec’s new Poet’s Beach Saturday.

The annual event draws thousands of people who float the Willamette River on inner tubes.

One of the event’s founders, Willie Levenson, told FOX 12 the goal is to raise awareness that it's safe to swim in the river.

The Big Float also serves as a fundraiser for The Human Access Project, which tries to create more public spaces, beaches and access points in downtown Portland in an effort to help people reconnect with the river.

This year’s float runs Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, visit TheBigFloat.com.
