PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Firefighters were called to the scene of a raging apartment fire in northeast Portland on Thursday morning.

Crews responded to 5665 Northeast Glisan Street just before 7 a.m.

The building includes Big’s Chicken, which only opened in April

Plumes of smoke and heavy flames continued to emit from the burning structure as fire crews attempted to extinguish the blaze. Crews said the fire ripped through a large, empty attic space. Electrical wiring also made the fire difficult to fight.

Investigators said the cause of the fire was electrical, but the exact source has not yet been identified.

Portland firefighters said three people were rescued from the fire. Two people were rescued by firefighters and one jumped from a second-story window. All were taken to the hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The fire affected traffic, causing delays in the area.

The fire was knocked out about an hour later. Portland Fire & Rescue later said 14 adults were displaced by the fire.

One person inside the apartment said he ran for his life.

"It all happened so fast, you didn't really have a chance to figure out what was going on," he said.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the people who were forced from their homes due to the fire.
