Woman warns of prowler in Portland’s Woodstock neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

It was an alarming wake up for a woman in Portland’s Woodstock neighborhood as she said a stranger was peering through her bedroom window with a bright light.

Officers responded to the home in the 6000 block of Southeast Harold Street just after 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Jessica Fox said she was in bed and woke up when she saw the light coming in from the window.

“It’s a complete feeling of violation, it’s a theft of your safety and security in the one place where you’re supposed to actively feel safe,” she said.

Fox said her screams jolted her roommate awake and that he got a quick glimpse of a man sneaking out of the backyard.

“I have no idea what they look like, who they might be, it makes it all the more terrifying because it could be actually anyone,” said Fox.

Fox said her bedroom is in the far corner of her private, fenced-in backyard. To get near it, someone would have to walk around the house, open the back gate and walk across the patio. Now, she said, her concept of feeling safe at home has vanished.

“Now that has been taken from me. I really resent whoever may have taken that from me, I’m upset and I don’t want anyone else to feel that theft in violation,” said Fox.

Fox said she quickly called the police and told them her story. She said officers looked around her property and used a K-9 team to look for the suspect but could not locate anyone.

“I am sure I will continue to have flashbacks about what happened. Sitting in bed, looking out and seeing a light that you don’t recognize coming from outside your window, when there’s no one that should be there… in the middle of the night. It’s absolutely terrifying,” she said. “I never want this to happen again in my life, and I never want it to happen to anyone else.”

Fox said she wants to encourage her neighbors to be on the look out and make sure their doors and windows are closed and locked.
