A man initially identified as a person of interest in a double homicide in Vancouver has been arrested and booked into jail.

Tenants at the Central Park Place Apartments said Sunday morning they are still in disbelief.

"Would I have thought this would happen? No. Never would have crossed my mind," said one resident who didn't want to be identified.

Just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday, police responded to the apartment complex, located in the 1900 block of Fort Vancouver Way, on the report of an assault.

When officers arrived, they found two males outside of the complex dead with apparent stab wounds, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

"I heard some laughing and joking and then I heard some screaming," said another tenant.

Police say Dustin L. Zapel, who lives at the complex, was identified as a person of interest. They released a photo of Zapel in hopes of tracking him down.

"I think I was one of the few people that talked with [Zapel]. And I made a concerted effort to talk to him because he seemed kind of quiet," another resident, who did not want to be identified, said of Zapel.

One person who lives in the building said he talked to one of the victims every day.

He said that man was, "extraordinarily loved. Wonderful guy and people will be affected by him not being here. Always had a smile on his face. Really kind person. You can't in a million years imagine this happening to him."

At about 9 a.m. Sunday, Zapel was seen in the area of Northeast 94th Avenue and Northeast Covington Road and was taken into custody.

After being interviewed by detectives, Zapel was arrested on two counts of murder I and one count of attempted murder and was booked into the Clark County Jail.

Police say information regarding the victims is not being released pending notification of next of kin.

No further information was released.
