ROSEBURG, OR (KPTV) -

A blown tire led to a rollover crash that killed a driver and critically injured a passenger on Interstate 5 north of Roseburg.

The crash occurred at 5 p.m. Sunday in the southbound lanes near Milepost 133.

Investigators said Taylor Nieri, 22, of Eugene, was driving a 2002 Chevy van when one of the tires blew out, causing Nieri to lose control of the van.

The van went off the roadway and onto the shoulder where it rolled multiple times. The van came to a stop on its top after crossing Rogers Road, which is a county road adjacent to the highway.

Nieri was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, 35-year-old James Thorpe of Eugene, was taken to the hospital by ambulance and later flown to another hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

Nieri was wearing a seat belt, according to police, but Thorpe was not.

The investigation into the crash is continuing, according to Oregon State Police.

OSP was assisted by the Sutherlin Police Department, Douglas County Fire District 2, Roseburg Towing and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
