Portland bridal shop gives back to local, national charities

A woman's wedding day can be the most important day of her life.  For that reason, a Portland woman is making it a little easier for brides to shop for their wedding dresses.

Erin Scharf is the founder of the bridal shop Brides for a Cause, a non-profit dedicated to collecting both new and used wedding dresses and selling them for local and national charities.

“We kind of stepped back and thought maybe we could make more of a difference in we were a non-profit ourself so then we can open up our beneficiaries and be able to impact and provide money to other charities that might need it,” said Scharf.

Instead of spending thousands of dollars on a brand-new wedding dress, future brides can walk into Brides for a Cause on Southeast 11th Avenue and pick out a gown for a fraction of the cost.

Local bride-to-be Jessica Taylor said purchasing her dress from Brides for a Cause was a great way to not only save money but to also give back to those in need.

“The idea that I can get a dress here that kind of started as a donation from somebody who wanted to support this mission and then also my money, buying the dress would also support the mission. It’s a wonderful cycle,” she said.

Brides for a Cause also partners twice a year with Brides Across America. The organization's mission is to provide free wedding dresses for military brides and first responders.

Scharf believes it is a great way to say thank you.

“Just seeing their face light up when they find their dress, I mean that is one of the most rewarding parts of our job.”

Brides for a Cause has collected more than 8,000 dresses and given away more than $450,000 to women-focused charities.

Scharf recently received the FOX 12 Les Schwab Tire Center’s Be the Change Award, an award that puts the spotlight on those who make a difference in their community.
