MAX aggravated murder suspect Jeremy Christian faces judge

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The man accused of violently killing two people and injuring a third man on a Portland MAX train in May made another appearance in court Tuesday.

Jeremy Christian, 35, is facing charges including aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, assault and intimidation.

Tuesday’s hearing at the Multnomah County Courthouse was open to the public with strict rules in place.

Deputies said no disruptions would be allowed. The judge also banned anyone with any sort of message, like signs or T-shirts, that could be perceived as an influence on the case.

The restrictions were enforced by Multnomah County deputies.

In previous court appearances, Christian made repeated outbursts, including shouting, “You call it terrorism. I call it patriotism. You hear me? Die.”

His prior court appearances have also drawn protesters.

Police said Christian stabbed and killed Ricky John Best, 53, of Happy Valley, and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche, 23, of Portland, when they tried to intervene as Christian yelled hate speech at two young female passengers on a MAX train on May 26. Micah Fletcher, 21, was also stabbed by Christian and survived the attack.

In June, Christian claimed in court that he was defending himself from the “violent aggression” of Fletcher.

Fletcher attended previous hearings, but he was not in the courtroom Tuesday.

Christian has pleaded not guilty in the case.
