HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

Hillsboro police said they intend to charge a man with animal abuse after he was filmed allegedly abusing his dog inside a gas station Monday.

The witness who filmed the man, Sunshine Widmer, told police the incident happened at 275 Southeast Baseline Street.

Widmer said she was so disturbed by the man’s behavior that she started recording him on her cell phone.

The footage appears to show the man yanking and hitting the dog while yelling profanities at it in the aisles of the gas station. The dog’s cries and yelps can be heard in the video.

Widmer posted the video on Facebook and called Hillsboro police to report the alleged animal abuse.

Officers identified the man in the video and placed the dog, named Darnell, into protective custody. Darnell, a cattle dog/pit bull mix, was taken to a local veterinarian to be examined. The vet did not find any serious injuries.

The Hillsboro Police Department said the man will be charged either Wednesday or Thursday with misdemeanor animal abuse or attempted animal abuse. Police have not released the suspect’s name.
