BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

A man arrested on the charge of abuse of a corpse is now facing the charge of murder in connection with his mother’s death.

Matthew Gutierrez, 24, was arraigned on the new murder charge Wednesday. He made his first court appearance Tuesday.

Investigators said Gutierrez told police he burned his mother’s body in a fire pit in her backyard.

The case began when officers conducted a welfare check regarding 57-year-old Katherine McDowell at her home on the 11500 block of Southwest 11th Street on Monday afternoon.

McDowell was supposed to pick up a family member at the airport, but she never showed up.

A search of the property Tuesday led to the discovery of human remains in the fire pit, according to police. Detectives believe the remains are those of McDowell.

The Beaverton Police Department reported that officers cleared the scene Wednesday afternoon.

A motive in this case has not been released by investigators. Gutierrez is being held in jail without bail.

Police confirmed Gutierrez has been arrested twice since January 2016 on allegations of domestic harassment involving his family, including an arrest in March involving his mother.
