SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire at an auto wrecking yard in Salem on Wednesday.

Crews were called out to G&R Foreign Auto Wreckers on the 4800 block of Ridge Drive Northeast at 2:11 p.m. They arrived to find multiple cars on fire with flames spreading to nearby vegetation.

Limited access to the fire stalled the initial firefighting efforts, as did power lines brought down by the fire.

Incident commanders used foam and a water supply line that was stretched across a nearby rail line. Rail traffic was stopped for several hours.

FOX 12 viewers sent in photos and video that showed an immense column of black smoke that could be seen for miles.

The fire was controlled by 3:22 p.m. Crews remained at the scene to put out hot spots.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but initial reports indicated that salvage work may have caused it. There were no reports of injuries.
