SERT officers arrest teen armed robbery suspect in SE Portland

Posted: Updated:

Portland police officers arrested a 16-year-old armed robbery suspect after an hours-long search of a neighborhood in southeast Portland.

The Portland Police Bureau’s Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and Crisis Negotiation Team responded to Southeast 68th Avenue and Rhone Street just before 7 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators said the suspect was involved in an armed robbery at an apartment on the 2300 block of Southeast Courtney Road in the Oak Grove area at 4:37 a.m.

Deputies said the suspect approached the victim, pulled a gun and stole property from the victim. The suspect and victim know each other, according to investigators.

The suspect left the scene in a dark green SUV.

Evidence led police to the SUV in southeast Portland. Officers were getting ready to apprehend the suspect when he took off into the neighborhood.

Police issued a shelter-in-place alert to residents in the immediate area, as the teen suspect was considered armed and dangerous. The perimeter was lifted around 9:15 a.m.

The suspect was taken into custody on the 3800 block of Southeast 67th Avenue. Deputies said the gun used in the robbery was located by an "alert citizen" and was seized as evidence.

The suspect's name was not released by investigators Thursday. Deputies said additional arrests are possible in this case as the investigation continues.
