Washington County deputies and SWAT responded to a Beaverton home Thursday night after a man threatened to light the house on fire.

Washington County Sheriff's Office said just after 9 p.m. a caller reported her husband had set their house on fire. The caller also said her husband is drunk and has mental issues, and had spilled nail polish remover on the furniture.

Deputies, along with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, Washington County Crisis Negotiation Unit and Tactical Negotiation Unit (SWAT), responded to a home in the 12900 block of Southwest Gentry Lane.

Deputies said smoke could be seen coming from the home intermittently. Surrounding homes were evacuated.

Negotiators communicated by phone with the man inside the house for several hours. He was later identified as 47-year-old Roy Merritt.

Around 3 a.m., deputies entered the home and took Merritt into custody. Several burn piles were found inside the home.

Merritt was booked into the Washington County Jail on charges of arson and reckless endangerment.
