PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland State University campus security arrested a man Thursday who they say made racist comments and spat at a PSU parent.

PSU’s Campus Public Safety Office (CPSO) said a student from India and her visiting parents were riding the Green MAX Line on June 15.

Officials said the family was approached by 36-year-old Steven Klopp while waiting at PSU’s Urban Plaza MAX stop.

The student said Klopp began making racial slurs about the family's nationality and told them to leave the country. During the incident, the suspect reportedly spat at the student’s mother.

The student reported the incident earlier this month. CPSO investigated and arrested Klopp on Thursday at the corner of Southwest 10th Avenue and Market Street. He is not a PSU student and is being held at the Multnomah County Jail.

Klopp made his first court appearance Friday and was ordered to have no contact with the victim in the case. He is scheduled to be back in court next week.

PSU officials urge those who are experiencing intimidation or harassment based on their national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender are encouraged to seek help and call the police.
