Two-week Morrison Bridge closure begins Friday night

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Construction crews will be closing the Morrison Bridge for two weeks straight as they begin the next phase of its multimillion dollar deck construction project.

Multnomah County officials said all lanes of the bridge will close Friday, July 21 at 8 p.m. The bridge will remain closed until Aug. 4 or earlier if crews complete their work ahead of schedule.

During the closure, the contractor will be adjusting bearings that will support a heavier new lift span deck.

Concrete will also be poured for the east leaf of the span deck and the new steel grate deck. Vibrations from traffic can damage the concrete while it sets.

The Morrison Bridge is currently reduced to one lane of traffic. The upcoming closure will cause significant traffic disruptions. Traffic plan details include:

  • Alternate river crossings for all modes include the Hawthorne and Burnside bridges.
  • Ramps between the Morrison Bridge and Interstate 5 and Interstate 84 will be closed, except for the ramp from the Morrison Bridge westbound to I-5 north.
  • Motorists can access I-84 eastbound at NE Grand Avenue and NE Everett Street.
  • I-5 north can be accessed from the west side via I-405 north (Fremont Bridge). Eastside access is from the ramp at NE Broadway and N Williams Ave.
  • To access downtown from I-5 south or I-84 west, I-5 south drivers can exit at the Rose Quarter/Broadway Bridge and I-84 westbound drivers can exit at Rose Quarter/Weidler exits.
  • I-5 south traffic can access the onramp to Highway 99E/U.S. 26.

Crews will shift their focus to the west leaf of the lift span deck later in August. Another bridge closure will be needed in September to pour concrete on the west leaf.
