PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An unexpected stowaway was found on a plane set to depart from Portland International Airport.

A PenAir flight taxied around PDX for a 9:05 a.m. flight to Arcata-Eureka Airport in California on July 14.

During a pre-flight walkaround, a pilot looked inside the nose wheel well and found a small owl perched inside.

The pilot notified the ground crew who then contacted the airport’s wildlife department.

PDX wildlife workers carefully removed the owl and put it in a cage so that it could be released in a safe location.

A PenAir spokesman said the situation was explained to passengers, who were very understanding. Many of them watched the removal of the owl unfold from the window of the terminal.

A small crowd of employees joined them.

When the owl was finally removed, there were cheers and applause from the passengers and crew, according to a PenAir spokesman.

A maintenance technician inspected the plane to make sure the owl hadn’t caused any damage. Once cleared, the flight departed for California only about 25 minutes behind schedule.

It’s believed the owl got into the wheel well when the plane was parked overnight outside a maintenance hangar on the far side of the airfield.
