PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland is known as Soccer City USA, and Friday the Rose City kicked off the annual Portland World Cup Soccer Tournament.

The tournament runs through Saturday at Delta Park in north Portland and is hosted by Portland Park and Rec's Parks for New Portlanders program in partnership with PDX World Refugee Day.

The popular soccer tournament aims to celebrate diversity and help integrate refugees and immigrants to the Rose City.

There are 23 teams made up of 500 refugee and immigrant players taking part in this year's tournament, and some of the teams are coached by police officers and firefighters.

“They're trying to find their way, and I'm trying to help them do that, and I want them to trust the police,” Cpt. Mike Crebs with the Portland Police Bureau said. “The uniform is a big barrier, and I think that taking the uniform off and putting on plain clothes like this is a huge, huge step forward.”

The PDX World Refugee Day celebration kicks off at noon Saturday and will feature live performances, food and fun.
