BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

A paving project in Beaverton has one homeowner crying foul after she said the crew hired by the county chopped off part of a tree in her front yard with no warning.

Lisa Fletcher said the tree sat in front of her home for almost 25 years but now looks just plain awkward.

“We planted it,” she said. “It looks like a dead tree, all the leaves are gone.”

Fletcher claimed a contracting company hired by Washington County came by and cut off part of her tree Thursday.

“It was very beautiful until it was cut,” she said. “It hung over a little bit but it was mostly high branches.”

Fletcher explained that this all happened because the county is coming to repave her road next month, something she said she has known about. What she didn’t know, she claims, was that her tree would be on the chopping block.

“My mom just heard someone chainsawing in the front yard,” she said. “She came out of the house and asked the gentlemen what he was doing, and he said he was working on the repaving project and he was going to cut the tree that was going to block the machinery.”

FOX 12 reached out to Washington County’s Department of Land Use and Transportation, and a spokesperson said a letter was sent out to Fletcher and her neighbors telling them they must trim their trees or a contractor will do it for them.

The letter the county spokesperson provided also warned homeowners that the contractors are not trained arborist, but Fletcher claims the notices she got did not say anything about trees.

“We got two notices,” she explained. “Both just said, ‘We’re resurfacing the street, make sure your cars are off the roadway by 7 a.m. or they will be towed.’”

Fletcher said at this point, there is no way of making that part of the tree look any better, so she just wants it completely gone.

“There’s nothing we can do,” she said. “It’s not going to come back so it’s going to have to be cut off at the base, which I hope doesn’t kill it.”

FOX 12 did speak with another neighbor who also had her tree cut, and while she did not want to go on camera, she did say that she remembered getting a letter about trees.

The county is scheduled to have someone meet with Fletcher Saturday to help cut the tree in an effort to make it look better.
