Centennial School District board considering removing ‘Lynch’ from school names

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

In just over two weeks, a Portland school board will vote on whether to change the name of three schools due to a name that leaders say sends the wrong message.

Lynch Meadows, Lynch Wood and Lynch View are the schools in question. The three Centennial School District schools were named after the Lynch family who donated the land to build the original facilities.

Now board members said they have to re-evaluate to see if the word “lynch” and its potentially negative connotation are creating issues in communities of color and if students are being impacted by the name.

A letter shared at a board meeting in July noted a growing number of concerns during the recently completed 2016/2017 school year regarding the names.

The decision is not made yet, though. The board isn't expected to vote on the potential change until August 9.
