PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A convenience store that has called downtown Portland home for more than 32 years now has the backing of two city commissioners in their fight to stay in their current location.

Peterson's on Morrison is set for eviction next January as the city eye's renovating the parking structure that sits overhead.

The $25 million project will modernize the garage and shopping space as well as add better lighting and parking. It's a project owner Douglas Peterson supports but does not want to lose his store space.

Peterson says that tenants have been told they can apply to rent renovated space but feels new rules will restrict where they would be able to go.

Since June he has organized a campaign to collect signatures to urge Prosper Portland, the city's urban development agency, to keep the store where it's at.

Peterson says he spoke before Portland City Commissioners pleading his case to keep the store where it's at.

Commissioners Chloe Eudaly and Dan Saltzman then wrote a letter to Prosper Portland urging them to sign a long-term lease for Peterson's on Morrison.

A representative for Prosper Portland told FOX 12 Monday that no tenants will be staying during the remodel of the parking garage. They say the building will not have power or plumbing during construction. The agency says no decision has been made on whether Peterson's would be staying but encouraged them to re-apply for tenancy.

Peterson plans to deliver some 1,500 signatures he's collected on Wednesday.
