Protesters rally against GOP health care plan as DC prepares for vote

Posted: Updated:

President Donald Trump is ramping up the pressure to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, and while a crucial vote is planned for Tuesday, many questions still remain.

It is still a mystery exactly what the Senate plans to vote on as Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has not revealed which version of the GOP plan he hopes to advance to debate.

Trump, surrounded by people he called "victims of Obamacare," had a clear message to Republicans during public address Monday - keep your promise.

“Remember, ‘Repeal and replace, repeal and replace?’” They kept saying it over and over again,” he said during the speech. “Every Republican running for office promised immediate relief from this disastrous law. We as a party must fulfill that solemn promise to the voters.”

The president urged Republican senators to vote in favor of starting debate, though it is still unclear whether the legislation will seek to replace Obamacare or simply repeal it.

Both of those plans have met resistance from moderate Republicans, who are concerned about cuts to Medicaid, as well as by a crowd gathered at a rally in downtown Portland Monday.

The dozens of people gathered in Terry Shrunk Plaza to oppose the GOP plan said health insurance rates in Oregon would triple under the Republican health care bill, based on Oregon Health Authority estimates.

“We have a lot of people who are really concerned, concerned they may lose access to healthcare or worried it may become so expensive they have to choose between going to the doctor or falling into huge debt,” Hannah Taube with Oregon Working Families said.

Tuesday’s expected vote in the Senate needs 50 votes to proceed. The bill has previously fallen short on Republican support, but it is an open question whether skeptical senators will be won over by the president.
