Oregon state and city leaders are voicing their responses to President Donald Trump’s recent declaration stating he will ban any transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. military.

In several tweets Wednesday, the president said the government “will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.”

Oregon Governor Kate Brown said the ban will continue to divide the country.

Oregon senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley and other leaders also expressed their opinions on social media.

On Twitter, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler thanked current trans service members and offered them support.

According to a RAND study, there are between 2, 500 and 7,000 transgender service members currently serving in the U.S. military with another 1,500 to 4,000 in the reserves.
