PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

There were more than 1,200 possible crime offenses reported involving the TriMet system in 2016.

TriMet released its crime statistics report for 2016 on Wednesday.

For the first time, TriMet is using the National Incident-Based Reporting System to track and calculate crime reports on the transit system.

The new system tracks offenses, not incidents, and there may be multiple offenses involved in a single incident. As a result, the 2016 statistics cannot be directly compared to previous years.

However, TriMet security officials believe crime reports remained similar from 2015 to 2016.

In 2016, there were 1,247 reported offenses. Of those, 721 involved property and 287 were against a person or people. Another 239 were considered “society offenses,” including crimes like drug possession.

There were 733 reports of person or property offenses involving customers, with 200 reported as assault, sex offenses or intimidation and 530 involving theft, vandalism and robbery.

Of the overall offenses, 47 percent were on the rail system, which includes MAX and WES, 28 percent were on the bus system and 25 percent were off the system, which includes TriMet Park & Ride locations, restricted trackways and TriMet business and office locations.

TriMet’s overall ridership in 2016 was nearly 99 million.

On Wednesday, TriMet’s board of directors gave a first reading to an ordinance that would extend public transportation bans for violent and repeat offenders on the TriMet system.
