A man and woman were attacked by a homeless man with a metal baton at the newly opened Poet’s Beach in Portland.

Officers responded to Willamette River beach on the 2100 block of Southwest River Parkway at 4:47 p.m. Tuesday.

A 51-year-old man and his 49-year-old wife went to the hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening.

Investigators learned the couple had been walking their dog along the beach when they talked to a homeless couple at a tent. Police said they “exchanged pleasantries” and initially there was not a problem.

About two hours later, however, police said the homeless couple expressed anger that the victims’ dog was off-leash and playing in the water.

The homeless man went into the tent and came out with a metal baton. He then attacked the couple and ran away.

"It kinda makes me not want to come by myself, maybe come with someone, maybe be more cautious,” said Jocelin Vielman.

Officers contacted the homeless woman involved in this incident, but the attack suspect has not been found.

He is described as a white man in his 30s, 6 feet 3 inches tall and 240 pounds. He is associated with a pit bull, according to police.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to contact Detective Tony Harris at 503-823-0400.

Poet’s Beach opened to the public this month and is the first designated swimming area on the Willamette River managed by the city of Portland.

"They opened this for people to enjoy, people to bring their kids, trying to have fun. The fact that this is happening, people aren't going to want to come," said Vielman.

Michael Cox, spokesperson for the Mayor's Office, says they've asked the Oregon Department of Transportation to move the campers away from the beach.
