MADRAS, OR (KPTV) -

A wildfire near Madras has burned more than 10,000 acres.

The Emerson Fire began as two separate fires along Highway 97, about six miles northeast of Madras, and the fires were first reported at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The fires eventually burned together and continued to grow overnight. On Wednesday, firefighters said the fire had spread to 10,600 acres.

Firefighters were able to make good progress on containment, which was estimated to be 40 percent Wednesday.

The fire is burning in a mix of grass and brush on private land and the Crooked River National Grassland.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for abundant lightning and gusty outflow winds in the area through 11 p.m. Wednesday.

No homes are threatened by the fire and the highway remains open, but drivers are advised to use caution with firefighting equipment in the area.
