Fire breaks out at West Linn home days before family wedding

Posted: Updated:

A fire sparked inside a West Linn home Thursday morning, damaging several wedding accessories just two days before a large family wedding.

Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews were called to the scene of the single-alarm house fire at Derby Street and Lexington Terrace around 4:15 a.m.

Firefighters said the flames were coming from the attic. All five residents made it out of the home safely.

A brother of the homeowner said he was awake when he noticed smoke coming out of the light fixtures. The smoke alarms did not activate.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Witnesses said the homeowners were preparing for a large family wedding set to take place Saturday. The bridesmaids' dresses were in the room where the fire sparked. The dresses made it out of the house, but a bridesmaid said they smelled like smoke.

One family member said he was grateful no one was hurt, but the fire brings more added work to the family's wedding preparations.

“From what I understand, the bridesmaids’ dresses, the shoes for the bridesmaids, plans for the bridesmaids were all in the general area where they think the fire started," he said. "They have removed some of the items, but I don’t know how much is going to be able to be salvaged.”

The bride's wedding dress was not inside the home.

Homeowners also said 70 people were expected to gather at the home for a pre-wedding event Thursday night.
