PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Buddhist high monk visited Oregon Health & Science University as part of a partnership to raise the standard of care for the people of Myanmar.

The sayadaw of Myanmar was among the special guests at the OHSU Casey Eye Institute on Thursday.

The sayadaw’s visit dovetails with the Casey Eye Institute’s International & Community Ophthalmology 2017 conference, which begins Friday.

A sayadaw, or high monk, is a prestigious designation for those who have passed the highest possible exam for monks.

People from all five OHSU schools have visited parts of Myanmar and are in the process of laying the groundwork for training and teaching people there.

A symbolic signing of a memorandum of understanding between the involved parties took place Thursday.
