A woman was found dead early Friday morning while lying down on a highway near Castle Rock, Washington.

Cowlitz County Deputies were dispatched at about 12:30 a.m. on a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.

Deputies responded to the 7300 block of the Westside Highway and found a woman dead at the scene.

According to deputies, the woman was lying down on the highway when she was hit by a truck traveling northbound.

The driver of the truck, identified as a 19-year-old Castle Rock man, said he thought he saw a piece of black plastic, possibly a bag, in the middle of the roadway. He said his truck has a high clearance so he positioned the vehicle to straddle the object.

However, when the man drove over what he believed was plastic, he said he felt the undercarriage of his truck hit something much more solid than plastic.

The driver stopped and returned to the scene, discovering the woman’s body.

The woman was wearing a black jacket and lying down with her head pointed southbound, deputies said.

Detectives said the driver was cooperative in the investigation and there are no charges pending in the crash.

The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office said the woman’s cause of death has not been determined, stating that it is possible she could have been deceased before the collision.

A coroner will determine the woman’s cause of death and release her identity.
