Thieves break into truck in NW Portland, leaving behind $8,000 mess

Security cameras recorded two people breaking into a family’s work truck in northwest Portland Wednesday night, and now the victims are asking the public to help identify the suspects.

The victim said the truck was parked in an underground garage on Northwest 23rd Avenue and Flanders Street as she and her family were having dinner.

When her husband walked back to the garage to get their truck, he found it had been ransacked and glass was all over the ground.

The video shows what appears to be a bright red Honda pull up next to the truck. Two men get out, and one even changes into a long-sleeve shirt, apparently using his t-shirt to wrap around his fist.

The men smash two windows and damage a third on the truck, pulling their red car around to park even closer. They load up thousands of dollars in tools and equipment before taking off.

The victim's own a small business in the data communications field, and because they’re on call 24-7 they need to have gear on hand all the time to meet clients at a moment’s notice.

Between the items that were stolen and the broken windows, the loss is estimated at $8,000. Even after insurance, her family will be on the hook for a $2,000 deductible.

“When I first saw the video I was really angry that there were two people who had no concern for what they were doing, for how much they destroyed,” the victim told FOX 12. “It wasn’t just let’s pop a lock and take the stuff, it was let’s smash windows and take somebody’s livelihood.”

The Portland Police Bureau recommends that drivers leave their cars “showroom clean” without anything of value to tempt thieves. They also ask anyone with information that could solve this case to please call the non-emergency line at 503-823-3333.
