A woman and her two young children were hit by a car in a Safeway parking lot in Vancouver.

Emergency crews responded to Northeast 63rd Street and Andresen Road at around 9 a.m. Saturday.

Investigators said an 18-year-old Safeway employee was arriving for work and attempting to park when, for unknown reasons, he accelerated.

The car went through a parking lot separation hedge and struck a woman and her two children.

Deputies said the woman, 34-year-old Melissa Mcallister, is in serious but stable condition. Mcallister's 4-year-old boy is in serious but stable condition, and her 21-month-old boy is in fair and stable condition.

Deputies said the driver was not injured and showed no signs of impairment. He remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Deputies said it's too early in the investigation to know if he will be charged with a crime.

People in the area reacted with disbelief to what happened.

“Wow. That's just terrible. I mean just to think that somebody with a baby in a stroller would just be going on her way to the store, you know, in the parking lot. I guess I just don't think of somebody barreling through the bushes,” said Judy Klineline, who lives in Vancouver.

Cheryl Watson said she was home when she heard the sound of sirens this morning.

“Every time I back out I look around all around. Go slow. It shouldn't be just back out and think it's clear,” said Watson, who lives down the street from Safeway.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate this case.
