Gresham woman says man broke into her vacant home for sale

GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A Gresham woman said a man broke into her house in the middle of the day. To make matters worse, the homeowner said she’s the one who found him inside.

“We’re getting close to closing, but we had to do an extension,” said homeowner Courtney Murphy.

On Friday, Murphy said she decided to swing by her home after realizing she forgot to turn off the refrigerator.

"When I went through the garage, as soon as I opened up the back door, through the garage to the utility, I could smell cigarette smoke and I saw a man standing there holding some light bulbs that I had purchased that were left for the homeowner,” said Murphy.

Alarmed, she asked the stranger what he was doing inside her home.

“He had gloves on and sort of acted like he was working,” said Murphy.

“He said oh this is your house? The realtor sent me and I said no the realtor did not send you because he would’ve notified me,” continued Murphy.

Thankfully, Murphy said she was with a friend. So he spoke with the man while she went outside to call her realtor to verify if he let someone in.

“And I just said no. absolutely not,” said Realtor, Robert Ascherin with Portland Digs Real Estate. “They’d have to get permission and there is no permission given.”

“I immediately told her to make sure she was safe and if she wasn’t, to get out of the house and call the police,” continued Ascherin.

That’s exactly what Murphy said she did next.

“I informed him that if he stayed on the grounds and talked with the police officers and there was no damage then I wouldn’t press charges and he apologized several times and said no I have to go,” said Murphy.

Murphy said the man left before police arrived.

She said she later realized the man got inside by breaking the lock box on the door. Something Murphy’s realtor said is nothing new.

“Unfortunately, the vacant homes are probably the biggest target,” said Ascherin.

But in this latest case, everyone’s just happy no one was hurt.

Gresham Police said they have seen this before. Police said in this case, nothing was taken so the man is potentially facing trespassing charges.
