New Portland high-rise to feature mechanical parking system

Posted: Updated:

While the hassle of finding parking spots in Portland grows, developers of a new high-rise going up in town said they won’t add to the problem.

Located near the Hollywood MAX station, the new six story apartment building called Laurel 42 is set to open next fall.

Another high-rise in the city brings with it a concern of parking among many area residents.

“We have three around our neighborhood, and they do not have parking in them, and they’re in front of our house all the time,” neighbor Bradley Rohman said.

Developers of Laurel 42 are telling neighbors not to fear, though, because the building will have a mechanical parking system.

This system stacks cars safely on top of each other, which ultimately creates more space.

Ryan Myers, vice president of Harding Steel, the company building the system, said the developers of the new building wanted to make sure not to add to the parking challenges already facing neighbors.

“It was really important to the owner to not put additional stress on the neighborhood by forcing people to street park or under park in the building,” Myers explained. “Challenge for parking has always kind of been the breath of our industry, and we’ve seen that expand west.”

Myers added that this project is not Harding Steel’s first mechanical parking system in Portland. They have built others and he said they’re planning to build 15 more by 2018.
