Excessive Heat Warning issued as Portland heat wave begins

Posted: Updated:

A major heat wave is hitting Portland, and temperatures could climb above 100 degrees at least three days this week for the first time since 2009.

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning from Tuesday afternoon through Friday evening.

Portland International Airport and several metro area cities will likely set several heat records this week.

The area won’t get much relief at night, as temperatures will only drop to around 70 degrees Wednesday and Thursday nights.

The all-time high-temperature record for Portland is 107 degrees, which the city has hit three times: July 30, 1965, August 8, 1981 and then just two days later on August 10, 1981.

FOX 12 meteorologists believe Thursday could hit 107 degrees and tie the hottest day in the area's recorded history.

Portland has hit the 100-degree mark once this year, back on June 25, when the high temperature at PDX topped out at 101 degrees.

That heat wave lasted three days, only half of this week’s expected six days of 90+ degree temps.

Monday is also the 45th day in a row without measurable rainfall at PDX. The record is 71, set back in 1967, and no rain is expected for at least the next seven to 10 days.

Monday will be a good time to plan indoor activities and to limit time spent outdoors, especially during the heat of the day.

It is also a good idea to make plans to check on neighbors, elderly relatives and friends without air conditioning.

The Red Cross offers a number of tips on preparing for hot weather, and there are also a number of free or low-cost things homeowners can do to help cool down their homes as the temperatures increase.

For anyone looking to cool off, many local communities will be offering cooling centers free of charge.
