GASTON, OR (KPTV) -

Crews from five departments battled a barn fire in Washington County Monday morning, working to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby homes.

Just after 10 a.m. crews were dispatched to a property near the area of Southwest Patton Valley Road and Southwest Bates Street near the community of Cherry Grove.

When they arrived they found a 30-foot by 40-foot barn structure fully engulfed in flames and collapsing to the ground. Flames had also spread to the nearby vegetation and trees.

The crews responding to the scene were able to stop the fire from spreading any further, protecting trees and homes near the property.

Crews remained on the scene for two hours to put out hot spots that were covered by the collapsed metal roof of the barn., They also had to take a slower approach to dealing with the hot spots due to the high temperatures.

The source of the fire is still under investigation.

In total, 30 firefighters responded to the scene, with crews from Gaston Fire District leading the response with assistance from crews from Forest Grove Fire & Rescue, Cornelius Fire Department, Hillsboro Fire & Rescue and Oregon Department of Forestry-Forest Grove.
