BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

Get ready now, that is the message across the state of Oregon and Washington as triple digits temperatures are expected for several days later this week.

From Meals on Wheels to local ambulance companies, the message is all the same. They say over the next few days drink plenty of water and, if need be, line up a cool place to stay.

At Meals on Wheels in Beaverton, volunteers have been bracing for folks at their cooling center and are ready to hand out fans to home-bound seniors and those who need them.

“It is really the only way they have other than keeping the windows open to get cooled down,” said Jay Gilbertson with Meals on Wheels.

One of those getting a fan is Barbara Melrose of Beaverton.

“It gets really hot and stuffy in here,” Melrose said as she sat in her Beaverton apartment. “I’m just really grateful that Meals on Wheels can furnish you with something like that, I really appreciate it.”

It is something that is simple and something Melrose says will be a big help in the coming heat.

“I think maybe, I might be prepared a little bit better by having a fan handy anyhow,” Melrose said.

She’s not the only one getting ready for them either. Paramedics with Metro West Ambulance service says they are expecting to have a busy week ahead of them.

“You can plot out the number of EMS calls that we get with the degree of temperature,” Shawn Wood with Metro West ambulance said. “We have contingency plans in place to have extra, extra units available and to be able to staff accordingly so that we can be there when people need us.”

Wood says there are a few things people can do to make life a little easier the next couple of days. He says try to run errands or exercise early in the morning, find a cool place to go if you don’t have air conditioning like a movie theater or library. Most importantly, start drinking water now so you’re hydrated when the temps soar higher.

“We need to up our fluid intake and really plan our days for when we are going out into the heat,” Wood said.
