FAIRVIEW, OR (KPTV) -

The body of a man who drowned was recovered at Blue Lake.

Emergency crews responded to the lake in the Fairview area on the 20500 block of Northeast Marine Drive at around 3 p.m.

Deputies said the initial rescue efforts turned into a recovery operation.

Investigators said a man and woman rented a paddle boat and took it out on the lake. At some point, the boat began to take on water, so they jumped into the lake and attempted to swim to safety.

A witness on shore saw the man and woman struggling in the water and he was able to go in and help rescue the woman, but the man did not make it.

By 6:30 p.m., deputies said they had recovered the body of the 20-year-old man.

Investigators said people who rent paddle boats at the lake are required to wear life jackets, but it was not immediately clear if the man and woman were wearing them.
