SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

The city of Salem is preparing for 50,000 to 125,000 extra people in the city for the solar eclipse.

City, police and fire officials answered questions Monday about the preparations for the celestial event on Aug. 21.

Crews will be out around the clock for the entire weekend into the Monday of the eclipse, but people also need to prepare themselves for traffic and crowds.

“I would plan ahead for food, water, fuel and probably most importantly, know where you’re going to go,” said Mike Gotterba, Emergency Preparedness and Communications director. “Are you going to stay home or are you going to a location? Plan ahead and go early, stay a while and leave no trace when you’re done.”

People can sleep in city parks in Salem, but fires are not allowed. City workers are referring to it as a “sleepover” and not a “camp out.”

The city has launched a website specifically for eclipse information at SalemAreaEclipse.info.
