A downed power line started a brush fire and killed a pet dog in Banks.

Firefighters from Banks and the Oregon Department of Forestry responded to Northwest Killin Road at 10:12 a.m. Tuesday.

The fire was quickly contained after burning a 10-by-30-foot section of weeds and brush along the side of the road.

Investigators said wind knocked down the top half of a dead tree that fell onto a power line.

There were no injuries to any people, but firefighters said a dog died of electrocution from the downed power line.

Fire crews waited for Portland General Electric workers to safely cut the power before mopping up the remaining hot spots that were smoldering at the scene.

The Banks Fire District asks people to stay away from downed lines or power poles and call 911 to report them.
