Summer camps head indoors due to the heat wave

BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

With the heat moving into the Portland metro for the rest of the week, athletic clubs and outdoor camps are headed indoors, if not canceling things all together.

As the temperatures are set to soar above triple digits, kids are at an increased risk for dehydration, which can lead heat exhaustion and other issues, which prompted some of the camps to move inside.

The Tualatin Hills Park and Rec Athletic Center was packed Tuesday as the district moved some of their outdoor activities, bringing many camps inside the center in Beaverton.

Camp Rivendale, an outdoor camp for kids with special needs, was among the camps that relocated to the athletic center. Camp Director Tony Norkaitis explained the change would stay in place through the end of the week.

“Although it has been a little bit of a change of pace for us, it has been a really good one,” he said. “The staff here at Tualatin Hills has been beyond fantastic.”

Norkaitis added that the kids are happy with the move and are enjoying being inside a nice air-conditioned room.

Some events, like the Nature Mobile at Beaverton City Park, were canceled on Tuesday and will be canceled Thursday because of the heat. Park and rec staff said current information on the status of camps will be updated on the department website at THPRD.org.

Parks department officials also noted that all of the rec centers will be used as cooling centers for those on the west side of the metro area looking for a good place to cool off from the heat.
