PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A 22-year-old man accused of stealing a Portland Fire & Rescue van early Wednesday morning was arrested by police.

A Portland police officer observed a PF&R van driving on a flat tire with no lights on in the area of North Interstate Avenue and North Ainsworth Street. The officer attempted to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver tried to flee.

The van then crashed near the 1400 block of North Killingsworth Street, damaging a TriMet bus shelter and a tree.

The driver, identified by police as Michael M. Qualls, left the scene by foot but was shortly apprehended by the officer.

Qualls was arrested and PF&R responded to the scene.

The van was towed to the City of Portland maintenance yard and no injuries were reported.

Qualls is scheduled to be arraigned at 2 p.m.
