People working outside do their best to stay cool during the heat wave

Posted: Updated:

While many people work in an office with air conditioning, others are working outdoors with the sun beating down on them.

At the Fastrak gas station in northeast Portland, Veronica Chamberlain was busy pumping gas in the early morning heat.

“It’s actually really not that bad,” Chamberlain said.

Wednesday was her first day on the job, and she says she's prepared for the scorching temperatures.

“The past couple of days I have been waking up and drinking like some sort of Gatorade, like electrolyte drink in the morning and water throughout the rest of the day," said Chamberlain.

Chamberlain also says taking a few more breaks throughout the day will help as well.

Over in the Pearl District, Michelle Hiebert was cooking up a storm inside the Koi Fusion food cart near Providence Park.

“I’m okay with the heat,” Hiebert said. “I know a lot of people can’t handle the heat but I’m okay with it.”

Hiebert says she’s lived in the Caribbean and Las Vegas so triple digit temps felt more like home. She said her manager dropped off a bunch of ice tea and there was a fan to circulate the air inside the cart.

Hiebert says she was told if things got too hot they could shut down early for the day.

In southwest Portland, it was the sound of splashing at the Wilson Pool that filled the air.

“Today has been a hot day,” lifeguard Ezra Albright said.

Ezra has a job many may want to have on a record breaking heat day. Lifeguards kept watch over the pool for hours as the suns rays beamed down.

“Once and a while when it is nice and hot we have to jump in,” Albright said.

He adds for those working at the pool today they were taking every step possible to not only keep swimmers safe but fellow lifeguards as well.

“We just try to keep all of our guards hydrated as much as possible,” Albright said. “We go around and make sure their water bottles are filled up and get good cold water as much as possible. We also have bandanas that we soaked with water that they can wrap around their necks to keep their heads a little cooler.”

The same advice they give to those in the water as well.

With another day of hot weather on the way, those who work out side say the best thing people can do to beat the heat is drink plenty of water and not to forget the sunscreen.
