SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A DUII suspect hit two young children who were playing on a Salem sidewalk and attempted to drive away before being stopped by witnesses, according to police.

Emergency crews responded to the 2200 block of Navaho Court Southeast at 1:49 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators said Casper Ankin, 40, backed a 2007 Ford pickup out of a driveway in a cul-de-sac and hit a 3-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy.

Ankin attempted to leave, according to police, but he was “physically detained” by people in the area. He then went into a home where he was found by officers.

The children were taken to the hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Ankin was arrested on charges of DUII, reckless driving, third-degree assault and failure to perform the duties of a driver involved in an accident.

Police said the investigation is continuing and additional charges are possible.
