PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Crews have recovered the body of a missing swimmer near Sauvie Island.

Deputies and firefighters responded to the 38500 block of Northwest Reeder Road at around 5:30 p.m. on the report of someone going under water and not coming back up.

Oregon State Police say an 18-year-old man was out on a boat with friends when they jumped off and tried swimming back to shore.

Witnesses say the man called for help and a bystander and a friend grabbed him but he was taken away by the current.

FOX 12 learned the teens were about 30-feet from the shore when the man went under.

"You could probably stand a good 15-to-20 feet out there. I mean, you can still paddle for awhile with touching your feet to the ground but there is a drop off at some point," said Ava, who witnessed the man going under.

By 6:30 p.m., the situation had become a recovery operation, according to deputies.

Just before 10 p.m., Oregon State Police confirmed they recovered the body of the man. They have not yet released his identity.

Deputies and firefighters from multiple agencies, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, were involved in the search efforts.
