July performance proves Portland station is the top choice for local news

FOX 12 Oregon (KPTV) outperformed all other stations in the July 2017 rating period to become the dominant local news leader in the Portland market. The FOX affiliate took the top spot in every single newscast, according to Nielsen Media. The July rating period confirmed the station remains top of mind in the morning and late news dayparts, but made significant gains in the noon and early evening news races to secure the number one position across the board.

The station’s long-running morning newscast, Good Day Oregon, continued to secure the number one spot from 4:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. The morning newscast, featuring long-standing anchors Kimberly Maus and Shauna Parsons, traffic reporter Tony Martinez and weather with Andy Carson dominated ratings in the key advertising categories of adults 18-49 and adults 25-54 for the entire four-and-a-half-hour broadcast. The station’s local lifestyle show, MORE Good Day Oregon, also secured the top spot in both the program genre and in the 9:00 a.m. hour. The 10 O’clock News, with anchors Wayne Garcia and Elizabeth Dinh and chief meteorologist Mark Nelsen, held the number one position in all demographics and the 11 O’clock News finished on top again in July.

But the most significant gains were in the noon and early evening dayparts. FOX 12 finished number one at noon, ahead of other stations after launching the newscasts just 10 months ago. In the early evening news daypart, FOX 12 dethroned the big three affiliates to secure the number one position at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Longtime anchor Pete Ferryman anchors all three newscasts. He is joined by anchors Elizabeth Dinh and Nora Hart at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. respectively, with weather from Chief Meteorologist Mark Nelsen.

“Our success in attracting local news viewers is a testament to our brand, our passion for local journalism and our continued commitment to serve our Northwest communities,” said Vice-President/General Manager Adrienne Roark. “We are so grateful to our wonderful viewers for putting this station on top in the Portland market and we are honored and thankful to serve them.”

“Our dedicated team works hard every day to bring our viewers the latest breaking news and weather, as well as stories they won’t see anywhere else.,” said Corey Hanson, Executive News Director. “When the big story breaks, we’re gratified that viewers make us their first, live, local choice.”
