Deputies have arrested a man accused of killing another man and burning his body under a bridge in Umatilla County.

Conor Michael Dayton, 24, of Milton-Freewater, has been charged with murder for the death of Marcos Jesus Gutierrez-Rodriguez.

The body of Gutierrez-Rodriguez was found badly burned under the Eastside Road Bridge the morning of May 22.

Detectives followed multiple leads and interviewed numerous witnesses that led them to Dayton.

Dayton was taken into custody on July 7. The following day, deputies said he admitted that he started the fire that burned Gutierrez-Rodriguez, however he claimed to have found the man’s body and started the fire to hide his drug use.

Following further investigation, detectives said Dayton was determined to be responsible for killing Gutierrez-Rodriguez and then burning his body in an attempt to hide evidence.

A motive for the killing was not released.

The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office has been working the Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office and the case is expected to be presented to a grand jury in the near future.

Dayton is in the Umatilla County Jail on charges of murder, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and criminal trespass.

Oregon State Police, the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office and Hermiston Police Department assisted in the investigation.
