Instead of listening to the old saying “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen,” a Portland chef thinks the heat wave is the perfect time to eat some cool foods.
There are certain foods that are believed to bring human body temperature down.
Chef Vitaly Paley, who owns the restaurant Headwaters, told FOX 12 what foods to eat to help beat the heat.
Some of his suggestions, which are diverse across food groups and cuisines, include poke bowls, raw oysters and cucumbers.
But he didn’t just recommend traditionally cold dishes.
In some cultures, hot foods are thought to be beneficial during hot weather.
"In other cultures like the Middle East and India, where it's naturally hot, people like to think that consuming spicy foods can trigger a natural body cooling system," said Paley.
The chef also says not to forget drinking. Anyone who doesn’t want the heat to keep them from eating spicy food should prime their stomachs with a cup of warm tea, according to Paley.
