PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Paramedics not only have to worry about increased calls for people needing help during a heat wave, they have to take care of themselves, as well.

Paramedics with Metro West Ambulance said they’re seeing an increase in call volume as the temperatures have continued to rise in the metro area this week.

They’ve added ambulances and staff, even sending out paramedics who normally work in the office to go out on calls.

Kristen Bielenberg said she knows that in order to take care of her patients, she has to first take care of herself.

“I started hydrating last night,” she said Thursday. “We hydrate all throughout the night, all through the morning, all through the rest of the shift.”

Experts recommend staying out of the sun as much as possible, staying hydrated and trying to be somewhere where there’s air conditioning, if possible.
